PL: Liverpool Keep Title Hopes Alive After Comeback Win

A significantly altered Liverpool came from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s on Tuesday night, extending the Premier League title race to the final day.

Liverpool made nine changes for the trip to the south coast after beating Chelsea on penalties in the FA Cup final on Saturday, and were without injured Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. Southampton, who were out of form, saw an opportunity and Nathan Redmond stunned the visitors after only 13 minutes.

That goal will have sparked celebrations among Manchester City fans, as Pep Guardiola’s team would have been crowned champions had Liverpool lost – but their response was impressive.

Takumi Minamino scored at the near post on his first Premier League appearance of the season, and Joel Matip completed the comeback (67), deflecting the ball in from Kyle Walker-Peters’ defensive header from a corner.

The victory moves Liverpool up to 89 points with one game remaining, one point behind leaders Manchester City.

They will now hope that former captain Steven Gerrard can help them out when Aston Villa visit the Etihad on Sunday, while Liverpool host Wolves at Anfield.

City will win the title if they at least match Liverpool’s final-day result. A City defeat and a draw with Liverpool would also suffice for Guardiola’s men, assuming City’s loss to Villa did not result in a six-goal swing on goal difference
